Andy Mason returns this July to run his one-day Raku course, after a highly popular event last year.
Andy has 30 years experience as a Raku potter, and he will introduce participants to the history of this traditional Japanese ceramic artform as well as plenty of hands-on fun.
Raku is a fast-firing process, which means that you can see results in minutes rather than days or hours. Glazed work is placed in an outdoor kiln and fired to 1060 degrees, in around 20 minutes. The work is then removed with tongs whilst white hot, and plunged into combustible natural materials to create a ‘reducing’ atmosphere where the oxygen is burned away. This creates spectacular bright colours and metallic effects, and every piece is unique.
No previous experience in pottery is necessary. Andy will provide up to 3 bisque-fired vessels per person and talk you through glazing techniques. The cost of these pieces is included in the course fee.
We will provide light refreshments but please bring a packed lunch, which we can refrigerate.
Oxcombe also has a camping field and ‘rustic’ unisex shower block. If you would like to stay overnight before this event please let us know and we will send further information.
