Introduction to Ceramics Course
When is this course?
6 weeks – 3 hours each week. These courses will be released to run approximately every six weeks, select at checkout.
What will I learn?
- Introduction to the Ceramic Process – the various stages of clay and firings.
- 5 fundamental ceramic techniques – pinching, coiling, hard and soft slabs, and a taster of throwing on a potter’s wheel.
- Various decoration techniques such as slip decoration, transfer techniques, carving and creating texture.
- How to glaze your pieces, and various glazing techniques.
Who is this aimed at?
Both complete beginners and more experienced potters are welcome on this course. Your tutor will guide you through all the basics of each technique, whilst offering a more ‘advanced’ option for those who would like to develop further.
What will I take away?
During this 6 week course, you will have the opportunity to create a variety of ceramic pieces, such as cups, plates, vases, etc. We will show you examples of how to work towards particular outcomes, but will also encourage your creative exploration and support you towards any ideas you may have.
- The cost of the course includes clay and firings for 6 pieces, with the idea that you will use each technique to create one piece per week. You will be guided through glazing your pieces on the last week, and will then be able to collect your finished collection of work 4 weeks later.
- You will also come away with a strong foundation of the core ceramic techniques, giving you a fantastic starting point for your pottery journey.
What do I need to bring?
Oxcombe provides aprons, towels etc, but please ensure you wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little messy. All refreshments included.
Safety
- Please ensure your safety within the ceramic studio environment and follow our health and safety guidelines.
- These sessions are aimed at adults, younger people 13+ may attend the workshop however are to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
The Pottery Course will be held in the Stables Studio.
Following this course there is the opportunity to join a regular weekly class at Oxcombe where you can develop your skills and your ideas with the help and support of your tutor. These are held on various days of the week including Saturdays and evenings and are a great place to carry on learning about clay and all the amazing things you can do with it.
